January 13, 2013

Close to a hundred NAMFREL volunteers participated in the Unity Walk and Prayer Rally for Secure and Fair Elections (SAFE) 2013, held on January 13, 2013 at the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City. The event was organized by the Philippine National Police (PNP), in collaboration with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and other law-enforcement agencies, to signify the start of the election period.
At the crack of dawn, walk groups consisting of representatives from election stakeholders, government agencies, and non-government organizations started their walk from different points of Quezon City, to converge at the Memorial Circle for a short program.

Apart from messages delivered by Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes, Jr., Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila de Lima, and other officials, there was also a recitation of the Voter's Pledge led by Comelec Commissioner Elias Yusoph, and signing of the Unity Pledge.

The PNP is rolling out Unity Walks and pledge signing activities all over the country, inviting election stakeholders to unite for a SAFE 2013.
